Research Interests

Colt Pierce received his Ph.D in geography from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on the gentrification of the Eastside of Austin, Texas, a predominantly Latinx neighborhood, and examines how sound is utilized as a resource to induce neighborhood change. Taking from sound studies, urban geography, and urban planning, Colt's research unfolds how the sounds we hear are integrated within larger power dynamics in the city, elucidating how soundscapes are racialized, erased from our senses, and replaced by more profitable soundscapes for affluent consumption. Adding to the lexicon of gentrification scholarship, Colt's work advocates for more sound-based urban research.

His work has appeared in the Journal of Urban Affairs, Journal of Cultural Geography, and Geography in Higher Education.
